Healthy choices by reading the food labels

Healthy choices by reading the food labels

Food labels can be hard to decipher, but training yourself to do this is perhaps the fastest and easiest way to make food choices that are healthy for you and your family.

There are some quick tips you could consider on your next shopping trip to help you make healthy food choices by avoiding unwanted sugar, sodium, fat and other chemicals that are not necessary for the daily requirements of a healthy diet.

You need to look for these essential things which are printed on the package, can, or bottle: nutrition, storing instructions, food allergies, and the expiry dates. If you are on a mission to lose weight, you can start by checking the nutritional information on the label. The label will first have the amount calculated as one serving and the number of calories per serving. Then all the ingredients and the number of grams per serving are listed, such as grams of glucose (sugar), sodium (salt), trans fats, saturated fats, carbohydrates, and fiber, etc. Vitamins  added will also be on the list. By reading the labels, you can compare brands to check which has the least amount of sugar, fat, and/or sodium.

The ingredient list will also give you an idea of whether it has any allergy-causing substances (even in small amounts can trigger some allergies).

Looking for the highest number of ‘health stars’ on the label is also a smart way to shop. This scheme was initiated to make a shopper’s life easier.
