Just a few years back you could find organic food in a specialized market, but today you can buy it in any supermarket. It can cause a bit of a dilemma for buyers. We have the same fruit or vegetables on the shelves and they look the same, so which product to buy. In order to understand what organic food means, you will have to know the difference between ordinary and organic food. The organic food isn’t anything special, it is just a new, better way of growing fruits and vegetables. Organic farming means that soil and water are without pollution and there are pesticides used in production of this food.
When you are buying organic food you will have to check is it approved by the USDA (The U.S. Department of Agriculture). If it is, it will have a label with this name and it means that that food meets strict standards. Although, this is voluntary and farmers with less than $5000 of income don’t have to use it, many farmers do this label. It is good for farmers and for buyers. Only products that are 95% or more organic can have this label and fruit and vegetables that are 100% organic can carry this label. Products with less than 75% organic values can have ‘’made with organic materials’’ label.
You must remember that organic and natural is not the same thing. Natural refers to something that was grown in the forest and then used in some products. But organic means that it is grown on a farm, using healthy and organic materials.
